The year is moving rapidly, unlike me! I'm not sure where the year has gone, but as I write, it is nearly September. Horse shows are "hot and heavy", the WSH Games State Finals are here and trail rides are "all over the place". My hat is off to everyone, no matter which avenue you are on, remember having fun is like life "it's a journey not a destination" and the more fun you have, the more people you'll bring with you. When you read this, WSHGD "state finals" will be in the record books and the Horse Show Division will be closing in on their "state finals". My congratulations go out to all who worked hard and participated at finals, remember, you're all winners!
I also ask that you take time to recognize and say thanks to those Division Chairs, Managers, Secretaries, Timers, helpers and volunteers who work the events. Without them things would be pretty slow! I want to say thanks to the Directors, Division Chairs and especially our Secretary/Treasurer for their time and effort. Progress is slow in some cases, but we continue to move forward. Thanks again to everyone in WSH, we are a great organization.
Again, Happy Trails!

Oh, what fun we had. I'm really sorry if you missed it. Andrea put on a GREAT ride at Capitol Forest. Even though she was limited on trails d/t all the damaged trails from our bad last few winters, she still did an outstanding job. The ride was interesting, fun and challenging. She did something new and I thought it was great. We all had a mandatory dismount and had to lead our horses across an unsteady bridge. It was great! A legal time to get off your horse and walk beside him! I think we should do that at all the rides. Then I won't have to listen to all those endurance riders say, "I can't stand not being able to get off my horse and walk a bit".
And the Pilchuck ride went very well. I honestly could not have done it without the assistance from some long time CTR riders up in the Arlington area, Linda Brown and Suzanne Smith. They really saved me. Both rides were blessed with great weather and lots of wonderful competitors. Everyone had a great time, there were no accidents, all the horses did OK without needing to go see a vet. That's enough to make any ride manager fall to their knees and kiss the ground. Can't wait until next year.
Unfortunately, the Green Mountain ride was cancelled. Lynne sounds determined to put it together for next year though. There are lots of folks up that way that are really interested in riding CTR. Hopefully things will work out next year for those folks in Kitsap County. It's a daunting task for sure and I know she would appreciate any help folks would be able to give her to organize that ride for next year.
It looks like we will have 3 horses that I know of from Washington State attending the AHA Region V Championship in Montana. Hooves & Company puts on a great ride. And they do 2 open CTRs along with the championship ride. One on Saturday and one on Sunday. Someone could take their CTR horse and possibly qualify for high point here by just riding that weekend. You can get more info about the rides at www.triarabian.org
Andrea and I did attend the Rocky Mountain Challenge. It was a little disappointing though. Nick & ended up getting lost on the last loop and running out of time to finish. I personally felt that the ride was timed a bit fast for the terrain. So, we were running on maximum time and couldn't afford to get lost at all on that last loop. Then after reviewing the ride times and hold times for the rides on Sunday after they were announced, we discovered they were not in agreement with CALDRA's own rulebook. The timing was not changed after being brought to ride management's attention and so we elected to pull our horse from the ride and come on home rather than support a situation that was not in the interest of safety for the horses or riders. It was a great drive though.
Here are the results of our rides so far.

A clinic on how to judge 4-H Western Gaming will be held October 4-5, 2008 at the Trails End Arena in Tumwater, Washington. It is sponsored by Washington State University Extension, Oregon State University Extension, and University of Idaho Extension.
This special gaming clinic is part of a comprehensive training program developed by the three PNW states to enhance the 4-H horse program. All gaming events run in the states will be covered (barrels, pole bending, key hole, key race, figure 8, NSCA flags, and individual flags). Instructors will discuss course set up, basic rules for each event, and penalties and disqualifications. Additional topics include what is expected of a gaming judge, proper tack and equipment, 4-H philosophy and ethics, and showmanship.
The clinic is designed for those who would like to become a 4-H gaming judge as well as for those who are already 4-H judges but who would like to learn more about gaming in particular. Individuals who attend the entire training and then pass a written exam will be placed on the PNW Horse Judges List as a gaming judge.
The cost of the clinic is $60 per participant, and registrations are due by September 15, 2008. Registrations forms may be found online on the PNW Horse Judges website at http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/horsejudges/horse%20judges%20index.htm, or by contacting your state or county extension office.
We are STILL asking for your help to appoint someone to the position of Zone Youth Merit Advisor as soon as possible to represent your Zone. We have some zones working diligently on raising funds for this year's Youth Merit Awards. The program is in need of approximately $2,000 to cover this year's awards and would welcome help from clubs, Zones, Youth Merit members, and, well...everyone! Each Zone with active Youth Merit kids are being asked to coordinate fundraisers this summer to assist in offsetting all of the wonderful awards the kids will be earning this year. Please e-mail Jessie McLaughlin at and let us know about your fundraisers (when, where, what, etc.) as well as how they were received.
Thank you to Puget Sound Zone for their donation of over $300 to the Youth Merit Program. We appreciate all of the fundraising efforts that have taken place so far by many of the Zones within WSH.

The season is winding down so quickly! There are only a few WSH Shows and the PNW Harvest Morgan Show before the Morgan World Show at Oklahoma City. Are you having fun yet? Are you spending some time with your Morgan on the trail or in the ring? You'll both enjoy it but you gotta get out there to do it!
Speaking of which, the Morgan shows this year are having good attendance across the country. The dressage section is doing especially well with lots of riders and beautifully turned-out horses. Now, where are the halter horses and what about the driving section? Showing in-hand is great fun and gives us a chance to celebrate our young stock. Who is going to see your horses if you don't get out there? Remember how exciting the shows were when we really had horses in the in-hand classes? Why not show in-hand? WSH offers lots of halter classes and these are a great place to be. Yes, the Morgan's do really well! Some people have said they don't want their horse beat by "some big English horse". Hey, what if you went out and your horse won! It's simple; it can't happen if you don't get out there!

I've received an email that is a tragic reminder of how important it is to keep your horse hydrated, (drinking enough water) especially during the summer months. Some of you may know Margaret Hubbard from her many years with Bits & Spurs. Recently her mare, April, who is very picky about the temperature of her water, didn't drink enough water during a hot day. April collicked & had to be put down the next day. It's a reminder to all of us, especially when you are at shows, to monitor your horse's water intake & make sure they are drinking fluids. Remember at shows to offer your horse water and be aware of whether they are drinking. If you have to, add something to the water to tempt them to drink.
** Bits and Spurs is adding a September 21st show. www.bitsnspurs.org we are hoping to raise much needed funds for yearend. Use the same form and the class list will remain the same. I encourage all members to attend. It is a lean year for many shows and we will be seeing more single judged shows next year due to expenses. See you at the shows**
The following is from Barbara Podeswick! Way to go Barbara and Sera!!! "Sera" and I participated in our first ever competitive trail ride on July 12. It was a WSH and AHA sanctioned ride. Those who know me well know that I spend a lot of time out in the backcountry, but competing in that setting was a first for us both. Upon our 6:30 AM arrival at the tree farm, we got our horses ready for the vet check. All wounds and dings were recorded and the horses were presented in hand at the trot. The judges also checked all the vitals as well as hydration, and swelling, gut sounds, soreness, etc. We then met and our route was explained to us along with how the trails were marked and when we could expect trail stops and lunch. There were two judges. At 8 AM, we departed one rider and a time with a minute apart between each rider. I was one of the slower ones to get into line so my mare and I did our best to stand still as all of the other horses took off at the trot. Each departure and the horses waiting were judged. The ride was 30 miles and 6 hrs and 45 minutes long (average speed of 4-6 miles an hour), including a 45 minute lunch and 4 pulse and respiration stops. At each stop, the horses were judged on manners and fitness, the rider on handing. After the stop a small task was given to test our trail skills (backing, side passing, moving up hill, and mounting on the offside). During the ride the judges would watch our horses go to see if they were behaving and how much control we had. At the conclusion of the ride we had one hour to make our horses look as if they were never ridden and went through the same vet check as in the morning. Afterwards, points were calculated and the placing announced. Some things you should know about CTR: You have a 30 minute window to finish your ride. Too fast or too slow and you lose points. You must have a pulse and respiration score of 16/10 (over 15 seconds) at each stop (the stops are cleverly placed, usually after steep climbs or places you canter). If your horse doesn't meet that margin after 10 minutes, you are held for and additional 10 minutes up to two more times, and are disqualified if you don't meet the criteria in 30 minutes (you actually get hauled back to camp with your horse.) Your horse needs to be comfortable in riding alone (even though you can compete in teams), and must be okay with people running up behind you and being passed. Your horse needs to stand quietly for everything during the ride and handling no matter what is going on. You also are expected to carry basic supplies such as a knife, first aid, and ID. Water was provided during the ride, which was a relief since it was 90 degrees. As far as Sera and I go, she was just as good at the start of the day as at the end (she is use to 50+ mile rides with fewer water stops and rougher terrain), and she could have easily done another 20 miles. We won our division, we won the AHA sanctioned section, and overall grand champion for the ride. Pretty cool for our first ride. The staff running the ride was really helpful and kind and the ride was well organized. They also had a shorter 10 mile ride planned for the next day for novice riders and/or horses. If you are interested in CTR or endurance please look at the WSH website for more info.
Everyone enjoy the last days of Summer!

LIFE AND LAUNDRY
Everything you need to know about renewing your life and reviving your spirit you can learn from your laundry.
First, laundry does not do itself. If you try to kick it under the bed or hide it in your closet, all you get is a smelly room. If you try to avoid your problems, they start to smell, too.
Second, remember that hot water makes things shrink and fade. Warm or cool water keeps them fresh. This is true when your spouse is angry at you, too.
Many stains don't come out the first time. Sometimes they never do. So choose: wear them anyway, make up a great story about how you got the stains, or cut up the clothes and use them as rags to wash your car.
This is also true with your life. When people or situations get stained, things may have to be transformed or seen in a new light if you don't want to discard them.
As you're doing laundry, listen. When the machine sounds like it's an African tribe playing the drums, your load is off-balance. If you don't stop the machine and redistribute the load, you'll end up with a huge repair bill or having to buy a new washer altogether. The same is true with your body. If you overload it without rebalancing, it'll cost you.
Always do your laundry between other tasks. Never make it your first priority, or you'll find that while you were working, your family went outside to play and you missed all the fun.
Bright clothes look great in the store, but if you don't bathe them in cool water, they'll bleed all over everything. The same is true for flashy cars, killer relationships and deals that sound too good to be true. Acquire them if you like, but keep some cold water nearby, just in case. Yes, socks do wash out to sea. This is one of life's great mysteries, but it is true. You put them in as a pair, but they come out single. Sometimes relationships work out this way, too.
Mend rips and tears before a good machine scrubbing makes them worse. Do this, too, with broken hearts, especially those of children. Nicks are relatively easy to repair. Harsh words and punishments might make them fall apart altogether. When you can, hang your laundry in the sunshine. Fresh air and a warm day can do wonders for just about anything, including your own spirit.
Finally, as you get older, realize that a new washing machine isn't going to make your clothes come out any cleaner. It just costs more than your old one. Ask anyone who's divorced.
In conclusion, remember that life is a lot like laundry. Just when you think you're done, you find another pair of socks or end up using your last clean towel to wipe off the dog's paws. Don't worry. The Laundromat's open seven days a week.
On August 16th and 17th we held our Annual Benefit Show and we had a great turnout. We were so pleased to have attendees from all throughout the State at our show. Although the weather was a bit hot, everyone had an enjoyable time. Our members did a great job of bringing in additional sponsorships so that we were able to give awards to every class winner. Our high point winners took home embroidered chairs, beautiful picture frames, gift certificates to Pro Horse Supply (thank you Cheryl!) and all will be receiving an 8x10 picture of themselves and their horse taken by Stacie Petrenchak one of our members. We'd like to thank Traci Ludwig for the wonderful Thank You Display she created for all of our great Sponsors. We'd also like to thank Tami Moe for all her work bringing in the sponsors and her help along with Brittany Husser on the silent auction and raffle that we held which the proceeds of almost $250 will be going to the WSH Youth Merit Program.
Nathan of OMGPhoto took some really nice shots of many of the participants. If you were at the show and want to see your pictures go to his website at www.omgphoto.com.
We are very fortunate to have such a great group of people in Puget Sound Zone. Remember if you live within Pierce County you are within PSZ and we would love to have you attend our meetings. They are held the 3rd Thursday of every month at Krickett's restaurant in Spanaway. Start time is 7:30 p.m. There are no meetings in November or December.
